The Thrive Women Initiative: Empowering Women, Transforming Communities

“When you empower a woman, you empower a nation. Economic independence is not just an opportunity—it’s a necessity for lasting change.”

In Nigeria, women make up 49% of the population, yet many face barriers to financial independence, with only 35% of women having access to formal financial services. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, over 60% of women in rural areas struggle with unemployment, limited skills, and restricted access to funding. This economic disparity perpetuates poverty, limiting opportunities for families and communities.

The Thrive Women Initiative by ATRED Foundation is a transformational program designed to equip 50,000 women with skills, funding, and mentorship to become financially independent entrepreneurs.

This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 1 – No Poverty, SDG 5 – Gender Equality, and SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth) by addressing systemic barriers, providing women with access to financial resources, and fostering sustainable entrepreneurship.

Why This Matters

  • Financial Empowerment Breaks the Poverty Cycle – Economic independence allows women to support their families, educate their children, and invest in their communities.
  • Gender Equality Drives Economic Growth – When women are empowered, entire economies flourish, leading to higher GDP and sustainable community development.
  • Access to Capital is a Major Barrier – Many women have business ideas but lack startup capital, business training, or mentorship to bring them to life.

Our Objectives

  • Provide Vocational and Business Training – Equip women with entrepreneurial skills in agriculture, fashion, technology, and small-scale manufacturing.
  • Offer Micro-Grants and Access to Funding – Provide seed capital and financial literacy training to help women launch and sustain businesses.
  • Create Mentorship & Networking Opportunities – Connect women with industry leaders, successful entrepreneurs, and financial institutions.
  • Promote Digital and Financial Inclusion – Introduce mobile banking, digital literacy, and e-commerce tools to enhance business growth.

Our Approach: Sustainable and Scalable

  • Needs Assessment: Conduct community outreach programs to identify women in need of financial empowerment and skills training.
  • Vocational & Business Training: Provide hands-on training in high-demand industries like tailoring, agribusiness, and digital services.
  • Pilot Program: Launch in Abuja FCT and Kaduna State, training 500 women in rural communities, providing them with micro-grants to kickstart businesses.
  • Mentorship & Financial Support: Offer mentorship programs, business incubation, and access to funding opportunities.
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Measure impact based on:
    • Increase in women-led businesses in rural communities.
    • Improvement in financial independence and household income levels.
    • Sustainability and growth of businesses beyond 12 months.

Scalability and Sustainability

The Thrive Women Initiative is designed to be replicable across Africa, with a long-term vision to empower 500,000 women by 2030.
