Nigeria is facing a severe deforestation crisis, losing over 350,000 hectares of forest annually due to illegal logging, desertification, and urban expansion. According to the World Bank, Nigeria has one of the highest deforestation rates globally, and the effects—ranging from erratic weather patterns to food insecurity—disproportionately affect rural and underserved communities.

The Green Future Initiative by ATRED Foundation is a large-scale reforestation and environmental education program that aims to plant 1 million trees in rural and urban areas, engage local communities in sustainable forestry practices, and educate 100,000 youth on climate action.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13 – Climate Action, SDG 15 – Life on Land, and SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities), this initiative takes a community-driven approach to restoring forests, promoting environmental responsibility, and building resilience against climate change.

Our Approach: Community-Led, Impact-Driven

• Needs Assessment: Identify high-risk deforested areas in Northern Nigeria (Kano, Kaduna, Borno) and Southern Nigeria (Cross River, Edo, Ondo) to prioritize reforestation.
• Tree Planting and Conservation: Partner with local farmers, students, and environmental groups to plant and maintain trees.
• Pilot Testing: Launch an initial pilot in Kwali Area Council, Abuja FCT, planting 10,000 trees in partnership with schools and local organizations.
• Climate Education Campaigns: Develop school-based environmental clubs, offering workshops on sustainable living and climate-friendly practices.
• Monitoring & Evaluation: Track success using key performance indicators:
  • Number of trees planted and survival rates.
  • Reduction in deforestation rates in target communities.
  • Youth participation in climate action programs.
