Girls in STEM Initiative:
Bridging the Gender Gap in Science & Technology
“A girl with a laptop today can be the innovator, engineer, or tech entrepreneur of tomorrow. The future is digital, and we must ensure no girl is left behind.”
In Nigeria and across Africa, women are underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. Despite making up nearly 50% of the population, women hold less than 22% of STEM-related jobs. Many girls lack access to digital tools, quality education, and mentorship opportunities, limiting their chances of pursuing careers in technology, engineering, and innovation.
The Girls in STEM Initiative by ATRED Foundation is designed to empower 50,000 girls with STEM education, coding skills, and mentorship programs, ensuring they are equipped for the digital economy.
This initiative aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 5 – Gender Equality, and SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure) by breaking gender barriers and promoting STEM careers among young girls in Nigeria.
Why This Matters
- STEM is the Future – By 2030, 75% of jobs will require STEM skills, yet millions of girls are being left behind due to gender stereotypes, lack of access, and social barriers.
- Digital Inclusion Drives Economic Growth – Providing girls with technology skills, coding knowledge, and innovation opportunities ensures higher-paying jobs and entrepreneurship.
- Representation Matters – More women in STEM leadership roles create role models and inspire the next generation of female scientists, engineers, and tech leaders.
Our Objectives
- Introduce STEM Education in Underserved Schools – Provide coding, robotics, and engineering programs for girls in primary and secondary schools.
- Offer Digital Literacy & Coding Bootcamps – Teach girls aged 10-18 digital skills, including web development, AI, cybersecurity, and data analytics.
- Create Mentorship & Career Pathways – Connect girls with successful women in STEM fields for guidance, motivation, and career development.
- Bridge the Digital Divide – Provide access to laptops, tablets, internet connectivity, and technology hubs for learning.
- Promote STEM Scholarships & Innovation Hubs – Offer STEM scholarships, hackathons, and tech incubators to encourage girls to create solutions for local and global challenges.
Our Approach: Hands-On & Impact-Driven
- Needs Assessment: We conduct surveys in schools and communities to identify girls with potential but limited access to STEM education.
- STEM Clubs & Bootcamps: We launch school-based STEM clubs, coding workshops, and weekend bootcamps to teach practical skills.
- Pilot Program: We’re starting with 500 girls in Abuja FCT and Kano State, providing mentorship, coding classes, and access to digital tools.
- Mentorship & Scholarships: We create mentorship circles where successful female engineers, scientists, and tech entrepreneurs guide participants.
- Monitoring & Evaluation: We track progress using:
- Increase in STEM participation among girls in secondary schools.
- Percentage of program participants pursuing STEM careers or further studies.
- Number of coding projects, robotics prototypes, and innovations created by girls.
Scalability and Sustainability
The Girls in STEM Initiative is designed to scale across Nigeria and Africa, ensuring more young girls gain the skills needed for the future workforce.
Through partnerships with tech companies, universities, and government agencies, we will create a self-sustaining model that continuously equips young women with digital and STEM skills.
